Melaka Gateway Project

Melaka Gateway project to resume

MELAKA (September 22): The controversial Melaka Gateway project has been given the green light by the state government.
The Star reports that Chief Minister Adly Zahari confirmed the mega development would be completed. The developer had already completed 60%, and so was now allowed to continue.
Due to freehold status accorded to the developer being disputed, and concern over the environmental impact on the nearby Portuguese Settlement, the Melaka Gateway project has been in limbo.
The Melaka government’s policy is to only grant leasehold titles to developers of commercial and housing schemes in the state, which is what gave rise to the dispute over the freehold status being accorded to the developer.
Adly, quoted by the daily, said the Melaka Gateway project, spanning 1,504.9ha, would encompass a mixed development on three artificial islands, including the construction of International Cruise Ferry Terminal jointly developed with US company Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.
“The work is already in progress, our priority now is to ensure that reclamation and construction work on the first island is completed by end of next year,” he was quoted as saying after a meeting with Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
Launched in 2014 by then prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, the RM43bil project includes three man made islands and one natural island and is slated for completion in 2025.
Adly also said that the meeting included talk about another port, Tanjung Bruas, which had good potential to be developed as a shipping hub.
